In this video, I break down how to train medical alert service dog tasks by building a clear, step-by-step training plan you can follow and adjust at your dog’s pace. We use a nose target (“boop”) as the example, but this same planning process works for other medical alerts and disability tasks (chin rest, paw target, “kisses,” etc.). You’ll learn how to: Choose your behavior cue (verbal or hand signal) and teach the behavior first Identify the context cue / antecedent (what your dog is alerting to—ex: fidgeting, blood sugar changes) Decide whether your task is a single behavior or needs chaining / back chaining Plan real-life reinforcement options (so you’re not always relying on treats) Break the task into milestones + small steps so you don’t move too fast Train generalization (different rooms, body positions, distractions) Use cue transfer to move from a verbal cue to the real alert cue (ex: fidgeting) Track progress with objective notes and aim for 80%+ reliability before moving on Organize YOUR training videos using an unlisted YouTube playlist for easy review and troubleshooting If you’re working on blood sugar / cortisol / scent-based alerts, you’ll need to collect samples and then pair odor recognition with your alert behavior—comment below if you want a high-level scent training overview.
