You mentioned that you have a 17 month old little girl who will literally starve herself until she gets a bottle. Toddler eating habits can be pretty sporadic. After the first birthday many parents notice that their babies start to eat less. This makes parents concerned because we're used to them eating a lot during the first year. Then it starts to taper off because they don't grow as quickly. The most important thing we can do as a parent is to introduce healthy options at each meal. Perhaps your daughter isn't hungry because in between meals she's drinking a bottle and that fills her tummy and makes her not want to eat when it's actually mealtime. Obviously you don't want her to go more than a day or two without eating, that is scary and it's good that you're concerned about that. If she continues to do it, bring it up with a pediatrician and they can decide if further investigation is warranted. Continue to offer her food and get all the bottles out of sight. Only introduce sippy cups with meals, if she wants anything in between give her a sippy cup of water. Eventually she should get hungry enough that she will eat. If she has a favorite food like chocolate pudding, that could even be better than drinking the bottle because it's getting her used to eating solids for each meal. If she is showing interest in anything that is on your plate go ahead and give it to her as long as it's the right size and it won't cause her to choke. I hope the best for you and if you have any other questions for me in the future feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/IntermountainMoms and recommend us to your friends and family too.
