Trauma and skin conditions that affect the nails can also cause toenails look like they could have fungus. There are three main reasons for thick toenails: -Trauma -Fungus -Skin disorders Trauma and Your Toenails Trauma to the toe can cause thickened toenails that resemble a fungal nail infection. The nail may become thick, discolored, and even ingrown, causing pain. A history of injury can help determine if the toenails are a result of fungus or trauma. Trauma can include dropping a heavy object on a toe or wearing shoes that are too tight when running, hiking, or rock climbing. Fungus and Your Toenails Fungal infections can cause thickened toenails. Typically, the fungus enters the skin first, even if it's not visible, and gradually spreads to the nail. Injury to the nail can make it easier for the fungus to gain entry and cause infection. In some cases, both trauma and fungus can cause thickened toenails. Skin Disorders and Your Toenails Skin disorders can also cause thickened toenails. Two autoimmune disorders, psoriasis and eczema, can produce changes in toenails. These changes can look similar to those caused by a fungal infection. For more information about how we treat fungal toenails visit us at: http://bergdpm.fosterwebmarketing.com...
