Bryansk Oblast is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). Bryansk Oblast lies in western European Russia in the central to western parts of the East European Plain, on the divide between the Desna and Volga basins. 2. In the 9th to 11th centuries CE Slavic tribes lived along the banks of the Desna River and in the forests of the land between the Desna and the Oka. The city of Bryansk was established in 985. 3. Bryansk is a city and the administrative center of Bryansk Oblast, Russia, located 379 kilometers (235 mi) southwest of Moscow. 4. The Venus of Eliseevichi is a piece of Paleolithic art (dated to 14,000 YBP) found in the region.[13] The Eliseevichi site is also associated[by whom?] with the earliest recognized dog remains, dating to 15,000 YBP. 5. As a result of the Chernobyl disaster on April 26, 1986, part of the territory of Bryansk Oblast has been contaminated with radionuclides (mainly Gordeyevsky, Klimovsky, Klintsovsky, Krasnogorsky, Surazhsky, and Novozybkovsky Districts). In 1999, some 226,000 people lived in areas with the contamination level above 5 Curie/km2, representing approximately 16% of the oblast's population. 6. Klintsy Sloboda was founded in 1707 by peasants-Old Believers, and is named after the last names of the first settlers (Klinets) in the plural. 7. In August-October 1941, the region was occupied by German troops. Soon it became known for its fierce resistance to the invaders. There were about 60 thousand partisans in the Bryansk forests. The invaders caused enormous damage to the region: cities (70% of the housing stock) and villages (111 thousand houses), industrial enterprises were destroyed and burned.
