Divis Tower is the last remaining structure of the once-massive Divis Flats complex in Belfast, a place many believe was the starting point of the Troubles. Originally designed as a "city in the sky," the complex instead became a deadly battleground. Its elevated walkways provided hiding spots for combatants and made life dangerous for the British Army and RUC officers stationed there. For years, running gun battles raged in this area, and the IRA used the top of Divis Tower as a lookout post. Supplies had to be airlifted to soldiers stationed at the top, as it was too dangerous to enter from below. The British Army's surveillance post remained until the 1990s. Today, Divis Tower stands as a haunting reminder of Belfast’s turbulent past. Watch to learn more about its role in one of the darkest chapters of Northern Ireland’s history.
