Avre Los Ojos was originally recorded for JAFFA ROAD's award winning release "Where the Light Gets In". The album was nominated for a JUNO award in 2013, and won the Canadian Folk Music Award for World Music Group of the Year. This is an original arrangement of an old Ladino song, that was previously recorded only once prior to Jaffa Road 's recording. It was originally recorded by Haim Effendi in 1912 in Turkey. It is one of the earliest known recordings of Sephardic music. Jaffa Road preserves the original melody & lyrics but frames it in a totally new contemporary arrangement. You can Haim Effendi’s original 1912 recording at this link.    • Malandanzas Del Asker (Avre Los Ojos)   The song sings the pain felt by parents as they watch their children go to "Asker" - conscription into the army of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries.
