A duplex ultrasound scan is a quick, simple, painless, non-invasive method of looking at veins and measuring their size and the flow of blood through them. Duplex ultrasound scans are done as outpatient tests. The procedure is performed while you are standing or on a special bed. Our ultrasound technician will apply a special gel to your leg and pass a transducer over your skin to scan the blood vessels. The transducer will send high frequency sound waves to the tissues in the body and listen for returning echoes. The echoes are processed into images, which become visible immediately on a video display screen. A diagnostic ultrasound helps to pinpoint the source of a problem with blood flow.
