A rare and extreme continental divide is creating three completely different weather threats across the United States simultaneously. A major March blizzard is developing across the Upper Midwest with Central and Northern Wisconsin facing 2-3 feet of snow, while Minneapolis expects 12-18 inches and blizzard conditions. Some isolated locations in Michigan's Upper Peninsula could approach 50 inches of total snowfall. At the same time, a dangerous severe weather outbreak is unfolding across the South with enhanced tornado risk stretching from East Texas through the Mississippi River Valley into the Mid-Atlantic. Damaging winds of 60-80 mph and strong tornadoes are expected, with the most dangerous conditions occurring overnight when people are sleeping. Meanwhile, the Desert Southwest including Southern California, Phoenix, and West Texas is experiencing record-breaking heat with temperatures 20-30 degrees above normal. Behind all of this, a massive Arctic blast will drop temperatures 40-50 degrees within 24 hours, bringing freezing conditions unusually far south to the Gulf Coast.
