Artificial Intelligence has been around for more than a decade in some form or another, but its role is shifting rapidly. Neil Thompson, Director of the FutureTech Research Project at MIT, spoke with MIT Sloan Management Review India’s Moushmi Sinha about how AI is moving from assistance to autonomy, progressing beyond pilot projects to deliver measurable strategic advantage and transform workflows. Thompson, who is also Principal Investigator at MIT’s Initiative on the Digital Economy, likened the change to the rise of chess software, which once needed humans to remain competitive but now outplays the best grandmasters. He said that AI may follow a similar path, starting as a support tool and eventually operating on its own. He also cautioned that AI should not be seen as just an add-on, nor as a complete replacement for human work, but as a tool that must be integrated thoughtfully into how people operate. Full interview now on YouTube Thompson will be in Bengaluru for the #StrategyShiftForum to deliver his masterclass, “The Coming Wave of AI Automation: When and Where?”. Join us at Conrad, Bengaluru, on September 25.
