ScotRail services on this route from Edinburgh to Aberdeen usually operate hourly with LNER operating the service in certain hours of the day from London Kings Cross with Cross Country providing extra services towards Birmingham New Street. Most ScotRail services on this route have an express calling pattern being non stop Haymarket to Cupar with selected services skipping most stations between Dundee and Aberdeen. Caledonian Sleeper operate daily services 6 nights a week along this route to London Euston. Additional semi fast services operate hourly as far as Dundee with stopping services operating on this route as far as Inverkeithing/Kirkcaldy continuing to Dunfermline/Leven. Between Haymarket and Edinburgh additional ScotRail, Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express, Lumo, LNER and Cross Country services operate. At Waverley there is ECML interchange and at Haymarket there is WCML interchange as well as Edinburgh Trams. The rolling stock on this route is currently mainly Inter7city trains formed of 4 or 5 passenger carriages and 2 class 43 locomotives. Class 170 Turbostar 3 carriage units and Class 158 Express Sprinter 2 carriage units operate some services wither as single units or in multiple formations. LNER services on this route are operated by class 800 9 carriage Intercity Express Azuma bi-mode trains. Class 222 Meridian may replace the HST sets on this route, however this is not yet confirmed. This route is in the progress of being electrified at the southern end around Edinburgh and Fife for new Bi-Mode ScotRail trains, with the rest of this route being unelectrified. This route is mainly double track throughout with short sections of single track at certain points along this route.
