How far can you ride in one hour? For decades, elite cyclists have tested themselves against the clock — and the UCI, cycling's governing body, has had different rules over the years as to what positions are legal. In 1972, Eddy Merckx set a world record on a relatively normal looking bike (read: no aero bars) of 49.431km in Mexico City. Later, the likes of Graeme Obree and Chris Boardman adopted aggressive positions and used highly specialized bikes to set new records. The UCI then banned many of these positions — including the 'Superman' position Boardman used to ride 56.375km. In 2014, the UCI laid out new rules for positioning, and a new wave of hour record attempts began, starting with Jens Voigt, who at age 43 rode 51.11km. Hour records with any position are classified as UCI Absolute; hour records with the 2014 rules position (think track pursuit) are classified as UCI Unified. In addition to the actual world hour record for male and female, there are also world records by age category. Recently, Stages Cycling vice president Pat Warner set a new world record for 50-plus riders of 51.013km. In this video Ben and Pat chat about how he trained for it, what bike he used, why he would want to try such a thing, and what others can do to improve their speed on the bike. For a deep dive into world hour record times, check out this great resource by Michael Mowett: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/... According to Mowett's records, Warner's 51.013km mark slots him as the 26th fastest rider ever (with official UCI recognition), just 97 meters behind Voigt. --- The Ride with Ben Delaney is a new channel by veteran cyclist journalist Ben Delaney, who worked for years as an editor at VeloNews and BikeRadar, and whose work appeared on Cyclingnews, CyclingTips, Outside, Peloton Magazine, and other places.
