In this video, we take a look at the Grumman F8F Bearcat, a single-engine American fighter from World War II that, if it had participated in combat, very well may have been the best American-made fighter aircraft in the war. We first talk about aircraft that push boundaries and limits, using the North American X-15 as an example. We talk about why some boundaries, like speed, haven't been pushed all that much, for technological, human, and safety reasons. We then switch over to the limits of single-engine piston-engine aircraft, and the creation of the F8F Bearcat. We talk about the multiple stated reasons for creating the Bearcat, from wanting more versatility to being inspired by German aircraft. We talk about the general concept of the design, it basically being a strong engine with a tiny frame built around it. We talk about the incredibly promising prototype performance, how it compared to the best American fighters in production, and why it ended up not serving in WW2 and the Pacific War. We end by talking about how, regardless of its lack of combat experience, the Bearcat should still be considered one of the best fighters in WW2.
