paraumbilical vein

A small vein in the course of the round ligament of liver, which establishes an anastomosis between the veins of the anterior abdominal wall and the hepatic portal, hypogastric, and iliac veins. They are small veins around the falciform ligament that drain venous blood from the anterior part of the abdominal wall and diaphragm directly into the liver, and communicate with other anterior abdominal wall veins. (Examples) • paraumbilical vein • inferior vein of Sappey • vein of Burow (caput medusae) The appearance of distended and engorged superficial epigastric veins, which are seen radiating from the umbilicus across the abdomen. It is a sign of portal hypertension, where the paraumbilical veins may become enlarged, in order to reduce hepatic portal vein pressure by shunting blood to the superficial epigastric vein.
