Concert: A Saxophone Celebration Honoring Saxophone Pioneer Elise Hall (b.1853 d.1924) - The Royal Room, 5000 Rainier Ave. S., Seattle, WA Sunday, November 17, 2024 Evan Takle, soprano saxophone Barbara Hubers-Drake, soprano saxophone I was pleased to be included in a recent consortium with the goal of a new piece by Chicago-based composer Marc Mellits. Marc writes beautiful music, much of it for the saxophone. This piece, called SWIRL, was written in memory of saxophonist and composer José Riojas. Bamboo and Brass LTD plays a quartet piece of his called Veracruz, which is one of our favorites, so it was natural for me to join the consortium. Marc writes: "Swirl was written in loving memory of my good friend, colleague, my all things saxophone guru, José Riojas (1982-2020). José had suggested I write a Soprano Saxophone duo for him and our mutual friend Paula Van Goes. Even the title, "Swirl," was Jose's idea. After his sudden and untimely passing, Paula put together a consortium of loving musicians and friends for the creation of "Swirl". The two lines of "Swirl" are forever intertwined and interconnected. They relay and embrace each other, much like we all relied and embraced our dear super-hero friend. The resulting sound is one of inseparableness and symbiotic inter-connection. The two saxophones form both melodic and harmonic content always together, allowing the music to unfold and swirl to the heavens as one." After joining the consortium, I too discovered an inter-connection. Paula Van (Regenmorter) Goes grew up in Sioux County, Iowa, just like I did. The video was created by my talented and awesome husband, Mark Drake. https://www.marcmellits.com/ http://www.paulavangoes.com/ www.theroyalroomseattle.com/
