Sometimes, religious behaviors become intertwined with mental disorders. Do you know how to discern the difference? And, where can you turn for help? Scrupulosity is a form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), involving religious or moral obsessions, and has been referred to as an “equal opportunity disorder that can affect individuals from a variety of different faith traditions.” Impacted individuals are overly concerned that something they thought or did might be a sin or other violation of religious or moral doctrine. In our educational webinar, David H. Rosmarin, Ph.D., will help us understand this form of OCD, and how it can be distinguished from normative religious practices and beliefs. Rosmarin, the director of the Spirituality and Mental Health Program at McLean Hospital and an assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School, will also review treatments for scrupulosity, and how faith and community leaders can work alongside mental health professionals in the treatment process. Finally, he will apply some lessons learned from the research and clinical literature on scrupulosity to other mental disorders.
