The collegiate church of Saint-Quiriace and The Caesar Tower. WOW WOW WOW!!! The collegiate church of Saint-Quiriace in Provins is a twelfth-century church that is part of the historical heritage of the city of Provins (France). It is dedicated to Saint Quiriace or Cyriacus of Jerusalem, intimately linked to the events of the Invention of the True Cross by Saint Helena. It has the particularity of never having been completed, the construction of the church in the proportions given at the beginning being too expensive. It is located not far from the Caesar Tower. An aborted monumental construction A first basilica had been founded by Count Eudes II of Blois between the years 1022 and 1032. Reference is made to the collegiate church for the first time in the text《The Privilege of Richer》written in 1062. A century later, the collegiate church had become too small to accommodate the community of canons present. The list of the Counts of Champagne, Henry I Count of Champagne or known as "Henry the Liberal" decided to have the collegiate church rebuilt on a larger basis in order to be able to gather in its choir a hundred ecclesiasitics (the Christian clergy) around the 1160s. The death of Henry I, Count of Champagne in 1181, left the collegiate church unfinished, but the choir was sheltered, which allowed services to take place there. The nave was planned to be eight bays long, but only two were finally built. The financial difficulties of the kingdom under King Philip the Fair meant that the construction remained in this state. In the sixteenth century, it was decided to definitively close the nave with a façade pierced by two openings. The cross erected at the other end of the square in front of the collegiate church indicates the place where the entrance to the building should have been located if the original dimensions had been respected... The Caesar Tower is a twelfth-century keep, located in Provins in Seine-et-Marne, at the top of the hill where the upper town was located. It is the only known octagonal keep with a square base[1]. The tower also served as a prison. During the Hundred Years' War, it was occupied by the English who surrounded it with a wall. The Caesar Tower has been classified as a historical monument since 1846[2]. History The site was occupied by a castrum (or oppidum) from the ninth century. The original enclosure housed a count's palace with large halls, chapels, dwellings and kitchens. This ensemble as well as the fortified city was dominated by the Grosse Tour or Caesar Tower built in the twelfth century and intended from the outset to serve as a prison[3][note 1]. A first tower, existing in 1137, is named in the charter setting the boundaries of the fairs of Champagne. The current tower was built on a rocky outcrop on the upper town, formerly called the "King's Tower", "Big Tower", "Prisoners' Tower", it was probably built during the reign of Henry the Liberal[4], after 1150 according to André Châtelain[5]. Legend has it that the origin of Provins can be found in Roman times. According to this tradition, the great tower of Provins was built by Julius Caesar. However, there is no evidence that Caesar came to Provins. This name is more to be compared to a symbol of power. In fact, the Temple Tower, of similar architecture, was also called the Caesar Tower[6]. Originally, the tower was uncovered and ended in battlements. The current roof and the framework date from the sixteenth and seventeenthcenturies[7]. My name is Eric Clark and I am a world traveler.
