What is an Umbilical Hernia? A hernia or protrusion of the intestines through a defect in Umbilicus is called an umbilical hernia. Umbilicus is the technical term for belly button. Why do Umbilical Hernias happen? hernias tend to happen in the weak spot in the abdominal wall. A weak spot can be a natural weak spot or a man made weak spot like an earlier surgical scar.
