After an argument on May 31, Jay struck Finona on the back of the head with a blunt object, believed to be the blunt end of an ax handle, at her home in Farmington, New Mexico. Despite being injured, Finona was still alive when Jay placed her in the backseat of her own truck. He then drove through multiple states—including Arizona, Nevada, and California—using Finona's debit card to pay for expenses such as new truck tires and gas. Eventually, Jay disposed of her body in a remote desert culvert just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. ​ Finona was reported missing by her family in June 2019. Her remains were discovered in February 2021 and were positively identified through DNA testing. While Finona was still missing, Jay was arrested and convicted for the unlawful use of her debit card in Nevada. While incarcerated, Jay disclosed to a fellow inmate that he had murdered Finona and mentioned having killed a previous girlfriend, stating he had "learned how to do it better this time." These statements, along with video evidence, financial records, and extensive forensic evidence, connected Jay to the murder and led to the identification of Finona's body. ​ In February 2023, Jerry Jay pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. He was sentenced to 33 years in prison for his crimes. This case marked the first prosecution under New Mexico's murdered and missing Indigenous person bill, highlighting the state's commitment to addressing such cases.
