Kurdish troops have created a safe corridor for Iraqi Yazidis who had fled their homes fearing slaughter from ISIS and were dying of thirst on Mount Sinjar in northwestern Iraq. From there, the troops guided at least 5,000 Yazidis to safety in Kurdish-held northeastern Syria. via HuffPo: [Kurdish official Juan] Mohammed said more than 20,000 Yazidis are on their way to Syria through the safe route but they and Kurdish fighters are coming under attack by Islamic State group fighters. He said that so far nine Kurdish fighters have been killed since Friday between Iraq and Syria while protecting the fleeing Yazidis. [Ekrem] Hasso, an official at administration of the Syrian Kurdish region known as Jazeera, said Kurdish fighters with the People’s Protection Units were able to open the safe route Thursday night after intense clashes with the Islamic State that left dozens dead or wounded. He said the majority of Iraqis arriving are Yazidis in addition to a smaller numbers of Christians. The Kurdish People’s Protection Units were formed to defend Kurdish communities in the ongoing Syrian Civil War from the Syrian government of Bashar Assad. Lately, the units have been successfully fighting ISIS and other jihadist organizations and have cleared a safe zone in northeastern Syria. Very good news for the Yazidis who were trapped, as they’re escorted into a zone where they can be protected from ISIS. However, in the long term, the war-torn Kurdish region in Syria will need help to care for these people without many resources of their own. But now, at least, the Yazidis have a chance.
