Never seen before behaviour of bee-eater eating snail shells... Bee-eaters migrate to many parts of India at the start of the breeding season. One such place is Naguvanahalli village, near Srirangapatana. The Bee-eaters are ground nesting birds. They dig the soft earth on the river banks to lay their eggs. One afternoon, I observed this bee-eater eating snail-shells and sand for its calcium requirements. Digging sand takes its toll on the beak and the bee-eaters have to increase calcium intake to ensure that the beak remains in good condition. When one of the bee-eaters gets into the tunnel like nest, its mate remains vigilant. The overhead wires serve as a suitable vantage point for the birds to keep an eye on intruders as well as to spot their prey. Unfortunately, domestic animals of the villagers trample the bee-eater nests. Though they get disturbed by people, a much bigger problem is the leveling of the ground for roads and other construction activities. Uncontrolled burning of trash by the villagers ravages the habitat. The Bee-eaters of Naguvanahalli are crying for help. Their numbers are drastically reducing every year as their habitat is shrinking. Naguvanahalli is a representative of the challenge the bee-eaters are facing throughout India. We need save their habitat from concretisation and keep it intact. Shot with a Canon Cinema C300 camera.
