Can a non-age-statement grain whiskey from Japan be any good? Let's find out! This is the Chita Distiller's Reserve from Suntory Japanese Whisky. A few years ago, when Japanese whiskey exploded in popularity, a lot of age-stated Japanese whiskeys from Suntory were taken off the market, so the distillery could rebuild their stock. This whiskey, coming from the Chita Distillery, forms the basis of many of Suntory's blends, such as the Hibiki, with Chita's Distiller remarking that this is kind of like a broth. Still though, what's in the glass should always be a nice whiskey by itself. There's not a lot of information about the age, or the cask profile of the whisky, but a little digging shows that it was aged in wine and spanish oak casks, in addition to American white oak. It comes in at Suntory's usual 43% ABV, so should be a relatively approachable dram. The Chita Distiller's Reserve Tasting Notes: Nose: There's white melon, cereal grains and plenty of vanilla jumping out of the glass. I also get a little bit of toasted brown sugar and custard, reminding me of a creme brulee. However, there's also a noticeable amount of ethanol coming through the nose, which takes away from the overall buttery and creamy vibe. Palate: Again, plenty of vanilla on the palate, reminding me of a sponge cake covered in buttercream icing. The mouthfeel isn't particularly rich, but does have a slight honeyed texture, which doesn't overpower a nice bit of oak spice which comes through the mid-palate. Finish: The finish is relatively brief, with a bit of sweet orange zest, more oak, and a touch more of that ethanol from the nose as I take a few breaths Ultimately, I'm usually a fan of well made grain whiskey, as I feel it's a great base upon which you can build flavours. However, at the price I see this retailing at nowadays, I think it's a bit too youthful, with too much ethanol, and I'd only recommend buying it if you see it on sale at a fair price. ------------------------------------------------------- I'm a total whiskey nerd and this channel is all about Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Rye, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey.
