DELSU 119th Inaugural Lecture: Prof. Edewor Advocates Justice-Driven Solutions to Niger Delta Conflicts Delta State University, Abraka, came alive at its 119th inaugural lecture delivered by Rev. Can. Prof. Uyoyou Nelson Oghenefejiro Edewor at the 750-Seat Lecture Theatre. The lecture, themed “Where God and Mortals Meet: Nelson Edewor’s Odyssey of Recontextualised Ivri Corpus in a Nation Soiled by Oil,” focused on the challenges facing oil-producing communities in the Niger Delta. Professor Edewor criticised the use of military force in addressing what he described as legitimate community grievances, calling instead for dialogue and justice-driven solutions, and noted that militarised responses often deepen tensions rather than resolve underlying problems. Professor Edewor cited the recent Okuama incident and expressed concern over the continued detention of Professor Arthur Ekpekpo, whom he said has been held for about 17 months without trial in connection with security challenges linked to oil-related conflicts. According to him, the situation underscores the urgent need for strict adherence to due process, community engagement and peaceful approaches to conflict resolution in the region. The cleric and scholar also paid tribute to what he described as the fallen heroes of the Niger Delta, recalling victims of past tragedies, including the Jesse fire disaster of October 17, 1998, as well as communities affected by recurring oil spills, gas flaring and other unprofessional practices. He urged authorities to end security excesses which, he said, have led to loss of lives and deepened mistrust between communities and the state. The event featured a red-carpet interview segment organised by KC Vottu Media, where guests shared their reflections on the lecture and its message of justice, inclusive engagement and sustainable development. Professor Edewor concluded by calling on government and relevant stakeholders to adopt policies that address the environmental and socio-economic concerns of Niger Delta communities, stressing that lasting peace can only be achieved through fairness, accountability and respect for human rights, as the event ended with a colourful reception and renewed commitment by participants to apply the lessons from the lecture in their personal and professional lives. #DELSU119thInauguralLecture #ProfEdewor #NigerDelta #JusticeForNigerDelta #PeacefulResolution #EndOilRelatedConflicts
