Football is king at Oklahoma. But football for Katharine Nutman means something else. " Yeah, there can be some confusion...I have to be careful with what I say sometimes," Nutman said. If you couldn't pick up the accent...Nutman hails from Southend, England. She says the transition wasn't too hard from the U-K to Sooner Nation. "I was expecting it, you expect America to be pretty much the same as England, but it was a bit of a culture shock at first. But I've had a year to get used to it now," she said. The transition was tougher on the playing field than it was in social situations. "Soccer in England is a bit different from here, the players are a bit more tactical, technical, but here it's a lot more athletic. So yeah, I had to get used to that pretty quick," Nutman said. "The speed of the game, and athleticism, is the biggest difference. She's an extremely technical player, and she played at a very high level, the English national team when we recruited her, but athletically, there's a difference...in the Big 12, and even the pro league, the national league she was playing in, so athletically she had to adjust," said Oklahoma soccer coach Nicole Nelson. "She actually exceeded my expectations for adjustment. And the other thing people don't know about Kat is, she was 16 years old when she stepped foot on campus, she graduated early, she's extremely bright and learns very quickly," Nelson said. That quick learning ability has helped Nutman play a key role on a Sooner team that has netted its most Big 12 wins since 2005. She's just a sophomore, but already a vital part of the team. "She does a great job at organizing, communicating, and running a back four. 1-v-1 defending she's very good, again, it goes back to her technique, and she looks to play, that's what we want out of a back, someone that can not only do their job defensively, but can begin the attack for us efficiently," said Nelson. And now, that skill helps Sooner football...mean Sooner soccer too.
