Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (AERD), also known as Samter’s Triad is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the sinuses and lungs. In this video we will cover ways that you can treat and manage the disease. One of the effective methods used for treating AERD is with aspirin desensitization. Typically, a person with Samter's triad develops asthma or nasal polyps following the ingestion of aspirin or other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen. These medications inhibit the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which is responsible for producing prostaglandins, and thereby compromise the blood vessels in the nose and lungs. Since aspirin is a common ingredient in many over-the-counter and prescription medications and is frequently used for headaches and pain, it is very important that people who suffer from asthma and nasal polyps due to aspirin and NSAID sensitivity be aware of this condition and avoid aspirin and NSAIDs at all costs. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ The mission of Allergy and Asthma Network is to end the needless death and suffering due to asthma, allergies and related conditions.
