On the western edge of the Federal Republic and in the border area with present-day Luxembourg and Belgium, there is a high-altitude region that reaches as far as the Rhine in the east and as far as the Moselle in the south. This landscape, which is the Eifel, is today known primarily for its nature and as a holiday destination. However, it also has a very eventful history: from a peripheral area rich in raw materials that already supplied the Roman cities, to one of the most fragmented regions in the Holy Roman Empire, to the poorhouse of Prussia and finally a popular local recreation and excursion destination.
