Egypt: Pyramids of the Nile and Rock Art of the Western Desert by Mavis Greer

Presented at ARARA online lecture series on March 13, 2021. Subject: Mavis Greer reviews the better-known architectural sites along the Nile, then describes an expedition to visit remote petroglyph and pictograph sites in the North African desert. Imagery in rock shelters is dominated by cattle but also includes humans, giraffes, camels, and hand stencils. Relative dating and archaeology suggest that most of the pastoralist rock art dates to 3-4,000 years ago when the climate was more favorable to habitation.
