It always amazes me what a genius Billy Joel is. "James" is based on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and sometimes sounds like a baroque rondo. The song is about a specific person, but this person was not called James, but "James" could be sung better, Joel says. The basis is what Keith Richards calls "Vowel Movements", the main thing is that the vowels sound good in the crucial parts. And James sounds definitely better than Rob, Bart or Marcel... It was great fun recording this and playing this fantastic arrangement by Leonhard Paul. As we say in Dutch: “een lekker nummer en lekker om te spelen”
