The Kurdish town of Kobani in northern Syria is planning to rebuild a museum on the battlefield where local Kurds fought against the Islamic State (IS) extremists for four months at the end of last year. Though the Kurds regained control of Kobani in January, half of the town was razed to the ground during battles and in airstrikes launched by the United States against the IS. "We were there when two IS extremists drove a giant truck over here. It was a suicide car bomb and it blew up all the houses here, including ours," said Alaa, a Kurdish fighter in Kobani. The IS extremists began to enter Kobani in September 2014, cutting off roads and water in an effort to force the Kurdish fighters to surrender. They also dug tunnels in the hope of defeating the Kurdish fighters by attacking them from behind. "[The IS extremists] tried to come at the Kurdish fighters from behind using explosions or other actions, but they failed. After the airstrikes, they began to retreat and the tunnel was half-finished," said a local resident. Although the U.S. airstrikes hit the IS extremists, they also brought huge losses to Kobani. Ruins and debris can be seen on almost every street in the town. According to statistics released by the local government, bombs and mines left by the IS extremists killed a total of 18 people in the first month after Kurdish fighters retook the town. Those who died fighting the extremists have been buried at a newly-built cemetery. Every time a vehicle carrying a coffin passed by, locals spontaneously salute to see off another hero who will forever be remembered by the once war-torn town.
