Numbers Ch 35. The Division of the Promised Land, Cities of Refuge.

Truth In Scripture Pastor Rick Kabrick Sunday, March 2, 2025 Numbers Ch 35. The Division of the Promised Land, Cities of Refuge. Pastor Rick Kabrick PO BOX 595 Tiverton RI 02878 www.paypal.me/PastorRickk GEN 15:18: On that day, the LORD formed a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your seed I have given this land, from the river of Egypt until the great river, the Euphrates river.” We see the Western boundary the Mediterranean. The debate might be how far southeast the area goes, but if taken literally, the east boundary (Euphrates River) and the Western boundary (Nile River) We see the area is quite large. 1SAM 3:20, And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the LORD. There were to be six cities of refuge; cities where people who commit certain crimes, like involuntary manslaughter, can flee to without fear of being pursued by the deceased’s family. A far cry from the stupidity of democratic hell holes known as sanctuary cities…idiots. A person who runs to a city of refuge will be safe until he or she is able to stand trial. The rules for cities of refuge are presented in a bit more detail in Vs’s 16-34 and can easily be viewed as a prelude to our current-day justice system. If the killing was not murder, in that is was unintentional, the accused would be safe in this refuge city. The LORD GOD sets the boundaries of the land to be given to Israel. It is given to them as their inheritance. However, Israel had to take control of the land of Canaan by conquest. In many cases they would have to drive out the inhabitants to take possession. Vs 4 gives the figure of one thousand cubits (about 500 yds.), while Vs 5 gives twice that distance as the measure of the pasturelands surrounding the towns. LXX reads two thousand cubits in both Vs’s 4 and 5.Perhaps Vs 4 gives the actual distance from the city wall in every direction (1,000 cubits), while Vs 5 is the total measurement on every side, so that the total actual size would vary with the size of the town. Terrain permitting, the actual size of the frontage of pasturelands in these towns would be 2,000 cubits plus the size of the town itself. 6 “Six of the towns you give the Levites will be cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone may flee. In addition, give them forty-two other towns.7 In all you must give the Levites forty-eight towns, together with their pasturelands.” 1. Bezer = Reuben2. Ramoth-Gilead = Gad3. Golan = Manasseh4. Kadesh = Naftali5. Shechem = Ephriam6. Kiryat Arba = Yehuda 7-8, “In all you must give the Levites forty-eight towns, together with their pasturelands. The towns you give the Levites from the land the Israelites possess are to be given in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe: Take many towns from a tribe that has many, but few from one that has few.” JOSH 20:7-8, So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah. East of the Jordan (on the other side from Jericho) they designated Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan in the tribe of Manasseh. After 40 years or so of moving the Tabernacle in the wilderness, what became of it? Well eventually it was moved to Solomons Temple. After the beginning of the conquest of the Promised land, the Tabernacle was first placed in Shiloh. This is where it remained for most of the period of the Judges. That period lasted about 400 years. Shiloh, a central location in the land that helped avoid disputes between tribes. The entire nation gathered to see the Tabernacle erected in Shiloh to make this their national place of meeting (JOSH 18.1). This shows the wisdom of GOD in not giving the Levites their own land area that others would have to go to. Rather they were spread out throughout the land. They went to the people.According to Levites, one responsibility of the priests (and by extension, the Levites) was to teach GOD’s word to the people of Israel. LEV 10:11, That you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken. This responsibility on the part of the priests (and their associates, the Levites) is often overlooked. We tend to look at them as only those who offered sacrifices. They did that, of course, but they also were called to be active teachers of the Word of the LORD. 2 CHRON 17:7, Also in the third year of his reign he sent his leaders, Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah. All Levites. See NEH 8:7; MICH 2:7, 3:11; EZRA 7:25; HOSEA 4:6.
