Thanks to its rich oil reserves, Trinidad & Tobago boasts one of the highest GDPs per capita in the Americas, and offers free schooling up to the college level to its citizens… However, underneath this paradise, there lies a dark reality. The country is plagued by crime, violent gangs and rampant corruption. In 2022, Trinidad & Tobago experienced its highest yearly murder rate in history, with 605 recorded murders, one of the top 5 highest in the world. In 2019, a top government official was arrested for receiving public funds via a non-profit organization, overseen by her husband and laundering the money through personal accounts. 77% of the workforce earns less than 6,000 TTD a month, which is about 880 USD. This amount is considerably low to live on, let alone support a family. Unemployed individuals, including those with college and master’s degrees, are left hoping for the best due to the scarcity of available jobs while many others are seizing any opportunity to leave the country. Once celebrated as a small island paradise, it has now transformed into a horror show.
