Brought to you by my Patrons! / nattosoup Shownotes: Full Shownotes: https://tinyurl.com/3td4dsen Superior Color Cool Watercolor palette $23.21 on AliExpress: https://tinyurl.com/3jj9w7ee Available in Yellow, Mint, Pastel Blue, Black 36, 48, 60 Inside the Box: Swatch Sheet Velvet Bag Palette Waterbrush Chunk of foam (sponge for cleaning off the brush, but it's a chunk of foam) The palette: The format is unusual and rather heavy. There's a fairly solid plein air ring on the back, but I would not recommend utilizing this palette one-handed, as it's so unwieldy. Superior makes a watercolor watch that's probably a better fit for actual on-the-go plein air. This could be good though for travel painting, but once unfolded, it takes up a lot of space. The packaging shows the chicklets of paint in removable and movable half pans, but mine are glued in, with the exception of the metallics, which seem to be poured mica rather than extruded paint. The silicone grip is sturdy, but I am concerned about how this closes; it doesn't feel like a very secure closure. Swatching on their swatch sheet: This thing is really big, so it's challenging to get all of it in the shot. This would take up about as much desk space as the folding screen style palette while being more unwieldy and heavier due to the additional packaging. This palette is way too cheap to actually contain the pigments they promise, so this is probably their student grade. Colors muddy the water fast, and are pretty brilliant in the palette, so they probably contain a fair amount of optical brighteners. The pastels are fine, but the metallics and neons are very meh. The neons are very pink and green heavy, not sure what that brown's doing in there, and that mauve metallic is downright ugly. Were they just trying to cheaply fill the slots up to 60? So far, not really seeing any granulation (and I did see some in the folding screen palette). It's kinda weird that this palette is light on the warm greens and purples, with all that space. So once this palette gets wet, you need to allow it to FULLY DRY before you fold it up, because these plates slide against each other. Swatching on Blick Paper: The colors are bright and saturated, they don't fall apart as you add water. Some of the neons (the purple, apple green, and hot pink_ are fun, but the metallics are pretty boring and aren't pigmented enough to really stand out, esp as an accent or on black paper. Some of the colors (mainly the blues) have a little granulation, and I wouldn't count on these being lightfast. Color Mixing: Colors mix easily and result in interesting, fairly saturated mixes that retain some granulation and interesting properties. Optical mixing did lift up some, but colors are transparent enough that you can see both colors. Lift Test: Almost everything lifts kinda uniformly, which is a bit surprising and generally not a good sign. Wet into Wet: Everything diffuses into water pretty readily, and colors intermix, which is nice. Some really nice granulation effects with some colors. Compared against other Superior watercolors: Mentioned in this Video: Fan Palette: https://tinyurl.com/4ves4b3v Screen Palette: https://tinyurl.com/bdh6bh3x Watch Palette: https://tinyurl.com/bdzhcwmr Student Grade: https://tinyurl.com/mryx8dmk Professional Grade: https://tinyurl.com/5n8n9xpv Pros: The paints are fine- same paints in the fan and in the screen, and probably in the 'watch' Student grade, but a decent student grade Bright, saturated color while still able to do a lot of the things professional paints can do like wet into wet and layering CHEAP, dang, you're definitely getting your money's worth Folds up very compact Decent-sized mixing palette Cons: Takes up a LOT of desk space when unfolded Not really the best for say plein air painting, despite the ring and carry strap Can't move the paints around like you can with the watch and the screen The neons and metallics are very underwhelming, I'd prefer just another mixing palette Chapters: 0:00 Introduction 0:28 The Packaging 6:20 Inside the Bag 6:38 The Palette 12:30 Google Translate Time 17:43 The Swatch Card 25:37 Swatching on Blick STudio Cottonrag Paper 30:01 Color Mixing 37:06 The Lift Test 40:01 Wet into Wet Test 42:39 Compared against other Superior Palettes 55:09 Pros and Cons 1:00:41 The Verdict 1:05:18 Final Thoughts Music: Sunny Travel- Nico Staf Seratonin from the Sun- RAGE Tumbling Down Clouds- NoMBe Lofi Mallet- Kwon Lazy Walk- Cheel Bab Tista- Text Me Records_GrandBankss Transformers Transformation Sound Knowpe- Noir Et Blanc Vie PluckandPlay-Kwon Simple- Patrick Patrikios Contact High- RKVC Blue Dream- Cheel MydNyte- Noir Et Blanc Vie Crazy- Patrick Patrikios Tranquility- Kevin MacLeod Silver Blue Light- Kevin MacLeod Finding Me Lukewarm HJazy- Asher Fulero Inner Light- Kevin MacLeod #watercolorpalette #artsupplyreview #watercolor
