Maryport: NOT what we were expecting!

Grim, bleak northern seaside town which has seen better days? We genuinely didn't know what to expect. We chose to break our journey here because there was a campsite by the sea which had good reviews and availability. We knew nothing about the town itself. We stayed in our Roller Team Auto-Roller 707 motorhome with our 2 rescue chihuahuas as we travelled south home from Scotland. The campsite was excellent - check out our video at    • Harbour Side Caravan Site Maryport Marina ...   - and we were soon to discover that that was true of the town, too. Never mind the views across to Galloway or the long coast path and sandy beaches. The local people were phenomenally friendly, welcoming and proud of their town. We spent so much time chatting to people (very unusual for us!) that, although I planned to scout out the town centre, I never made it. Apparently the town centre has seen better days, but that's true of most places. But there are many cafes and restaurants - we went to 2 cafes at/near the marina but there were plenty more, plus lots of history, including a Roman museum.
