This DIY BOA system for Vans makes for a killer MTB flat pedal shoe. Pretty simple to switch over and it has made my flat pedal riding way more enjoyable. BMX version(Scotty Cranmer Model) https://www.vans.com/en-us/mens/featu... BOA system https://www.ebay.com/itm/275257524440... On March 16, 1966 at 704 East Broadway in Anaheim, California, USA, brothers Paul Van Doren and James Van Doren, Gordon Lee, and Serge D’Elia opened the first Vans store under the name – The Van Doren Rubber Company. Formerly known as Style 38, the Sk8-Hi was a groundbreaking style that made it a staple for skateboarders around the world The Sk8-Hi was introduced in 1978 as “Style 38,” and featured the signature Vans sidestripe which was formerly known as the “jazz stripe.” Fast forward to today and you can see Sk8-hi being worn by the heshest dirt rats at the trails all the way to the makeup influencer you love to hate on instagram. This iconic silhouette has transcended the boundaries of cultural definitions due to it’s groundbreaking design. Today, I bring you an improvement to the sk8 hi that redefines how the shoe is used for MTB and BMX riders. This will also work on any flat pedal skate shoe and uses an lace closure system known as BOAfit, seen on many contemporary outdoor and cycling shoes. The laceless ratchet system I used was purchased on eBay and mimics the BOAfit system. The insulation steps are simple: STEP ONE Find a skate style shoe you prefer. In my experience, Vans have always felt the best and now they even have a BMX specific sole that has extra strength and rubber. STEP TWO Remove the laces from shoes STEP THREE Install the BOA system. There is a a right way and wrong way to do this. Just be sure to pay attention to the instruction pamphlet. The lacing direction is slightly different than a traditional lace. Also, if you get the BOA system linked in the description, I personally left out the adhesive pad that is meant to hold the ratchet to the tongue. I did’t see a benefit to this and it would probably fail quickly but if you use it let me know how it holds up. STEP FOUR Get familiar with the lacing system. There are some quirks with how the laces open up and will likely be different on your shoe. Remember, this isn’t a shoe designed specifically to use a BOA lace so there may be some hiccups. STEP FIVE Rejoice in the snug fit without the hassle of floppy laces! Thanks for watching. If you have any questions I'll make sure to answer in the comments below.
