The history of the Central Mining Institute - National Research Institute is one of passion, innovation and the unceasing motivation to shape a safer and more sustainable future. The origins of the Institute lie in the history of its oldest part - the Experimental Mine Barbara in Mikołów. In 1925, the Upper-Silesian Association of Mines and Mills leased the abandoned mine Anna from the Prince of Pszczyna. The local network of underground workings made it possible to conduct testing at real scale, as it mirrored the work environment of active mining plants. From the start of its operation, the primary goal of the Experimental Mine Barbara was to improve occupational safety in mining. It was here that ground-breaking research on phenomena such as coal dust and methane explosions was carried out, which had a significant effect on the development of modern standards of safety in mines. Currently, the Experimental Mine Barbara has gained international recognition as a brand thanks to the advanced research conducted in its underground and surface testing facilities. The unique infrastructure and experienced staff make it possible to perform a broad range of research and service work in fields such as mining, firefighting, building engineering, civil defence as well as the shipbuilding, defence and food industries, and many other branches of the economy. After World War 2, Barbara was incorporated into the Research Institute of the Coal Industry, which was established on April 16, 1945 and subsequently renamed into the Central Mining Institute in 1950. Since the beginning of its activity, the Institute has been focused on issues related to occupational safety in mining as well as on supporting the technological advancement of the industry. A range of innovative solutions were developed here, which formed the basis of modern mining and enabled the efficient prevention of natural hazards found in mines. The Institute’s achievements in this field found application not only in the mining sector, but also in other branches of industry such as the chemical industry and power engineering. Many of the solutions found global recognition, such as the systems of seismic monitoring used in international mining. The socio-economic changes of the 90s brought new challenges for the Institute. GIG systematically expanded its research infrastructure and developed its competence in the fields of environmental protection and monitoring, energy efficiency improvement, post-industrial land reclamation and radiation protection. The Institute conducts advanced research on innovative methods of mineral resource extraction as well as the implementation of solutions limiting the negative impact of the industry on the environment. Thanks to the many years of experience in solving economic and environmental issues, the Institute has become a natural and reliable partner for the public and private sectors. Thanks to its active engagement in the accomplishment of national and international research projects, the Institute plays a key role in shaping the directions for the development of science as well as in the implementation of innovative and practical solutions. The Institute is a valued partner in consortiums involving leading research centres and companies from Europe and other parts of the world. Through its research on issues such as methane emission reductions, waste management and the development of hydrogen technologies, the Institute sets new standards for industry by supporting energy transition and working towards sustainability. The future belongs to those who can shape it consciously. By investing in the development of environmental technologies, innovative solutions and education, the Institute is becoming an important scientific partner in the economic transformation, striving towards building a more sustainable world in the face of global challenges pertaining to the climate and economy. Projects related to the reclamation of post-industrial land, support of transition processes, adaptation to climate change, and development of circular economy are only a select few fields encompassed by the Institute’s activity. The contemporary GIG-PIB is a place where tradition meets modernity and local action gains global significance. One hundred years of tradition, innovation and passion. The Institute’s primary mission remains unchanged: to support development through knowledge. GIG-PIB - a hundred years of inspiration. A hundred years for a better future.
