Senators Cory Booker and Chuck Schumer have framed the SAFE Banking act as an "easy banking bill" that would allow profits from large corporations. This couldn't be further from the truth: current large scale operators are the only ones with the resources to navigate the legal and technical challenges of running a state-legal Cannabis company. The facts are clear: Small business owners do not stand a chance without SAFE, and public safety remains at risk while it is debated. A lack of access to banking services zero access to banking services like small business loans, blocking new entrants. Employees of legal Cannabis companies are unable to apply for loans, mortgages, or in some cases even personal bank accounts. Meanwhile, businesses of all sizes are forced to operate in cash - attracting robberies that target the large cash on hand and putting employees at risk. The bipartisan SAFE Banking Act has passed the House 5 times and was blocked in the Senate without a vote by Republican Majority Senator Leader Mitch McConnell. Despite hopes of progress from a Democratic Senate win, Senators Schumer and Booker now hold the act hostage. While agreeing of it's importance, they have opted to use the bipartisan bill as a bargaining chip to pass their own more comprehensive legislation. While their comprehensive bill is well intentioned, it is also significantly less likely to pass, as it simply does not have the necessary votes. Most recently, the SAFE Banking Act has been added to the must-pass NDAA, and will be voted or reviewed in conference in early December. Contact your Senator now, voice your support for SAFE.
