On June 8, 2024, Coracle partnered with the Center for Formation, Justice & Peace to host a day-long conference entitled, “Do You Want to Be Well? Diagnosis, Treatment & Healing for the Church in America.” The conference brought together 10 incredible Christian thinkers, leaders, and pastors to identify the particular maladies that afflict the Evangelical church in America, with a focus on Christian nationalism, racism, and patriarchy. This conference offers something constructive, something we hope can be deeply encouraging if not transforming. Over the day, we moved towards hope and healing, with opportunities for spiritual practice along the way. In view of the sicknesses afflicting the Body of Christ in America, we feel called to walk into the light and toward Jesus for our own healing and for the sake of others. Wrapping up the “Diagnosis” phase of the conference, author and speaker Carolyn Custis James unpacks the deforming persistence of the patriarchy in the White Evangelical Church. She explores God’s beautiful blueprint for creation, in which men and women ruled together over non-human creatures, before revealing how that blueprint was distorted through patriarchy, causing tremendous suffering and strife. She calls the church to honor God’s design for humanity, embodied perfectly in the counter-cultural life of Jesus. Carolyn Custis James is an international speaker and award-winning author. She speaks at church conferences, colleges, and other Christian organizations both in the US and abroad. She is a frequent guest lecturer at various theological seminaries. As a cancer survivor, she is grateful to be alive and determined to address the issues that matter most. Her work centers on biblical studies and focuses on the intersection between Christianity and twenty-first century cultural issues facing women and men.
