The Mark Zacher Distinguished Speaker Lecture 2023: Kathryn Stoner

UBC Political Science is delighted have hosted Professor Kathryn Stoner of Stanford as this year’s Mark Zacher Distinguished Speaker. She presented a public lecture titled, “Russia’s War on Ukraine: What You Should Know and Why You Should (Still) Care," on March 30, 2023 at UBC. Why did Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin decide to invade Ukraine in February of 2022? What does he hope to gain and what has he lost so far? What could bring this conflict to an end? Why should we all continue to pay close attention to Russia’s war in Ukraine? Professor Stoner will discuss why the invasion happened, what Putin wants and what damage he has inflicted on Ukraine while also unraveling Russia’s own economic and political evolution over the last 30 years. Professor Stoner’s most recent book is Russia Resurrected: Its Power and Purpose in a New Global Order (Oxford University Press, 2021). More about Professor Kathryn Stoner Professor Kathryn Stoner is the Mosbacher Director at the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law, and a Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Professor of Political Science (by courtesy), Stanford University and Senior Fellow (by courtesy) at the Hoover Institution. Prior to coming to Stanford in 2004, she was on the faculty at Princeton University for nine years, jointly appointed to the Department of Politics and the Princeton School for International and Public Affairs (formerly the Woodrow Wilson School). In addition to many articles and book chapters on contemporary Russia, she is the author or co-editor of six books. Her most recent book is Russia Resurrected: Its Power and Purpose in a New Global Order (Oxford University Press, 2021), which won the Russia and Eurasia Program, Fletcher School award for best book on US-Russian Relations in 2022. She holds a BA and MA in Political Science from the University of Toronto, and a PhD in Government from Harvard University. About the Mark Zacher Distinguished Speaker Lecture: The Mark Zacher Distinguished Speaker Lecture was created by members of the Department of Political Science, with the support of Mark Zacher’s family and many of his former students, to honour his contribution to the teaching, understanding and scholarship of international affairs. Annually, we invite one prominent scholar, leader, or senior elected official who has made significant contributions to the field of international affairs to give a series of lectures, and to meet with students, faculty, and community members.
