Latrobe Magnesium Ltd CEO David Paterson talked with Proactive about the strategic implications of the United States’ recent magnesium tariff exemption, and what this means for the company’s export plans and critical minerals positioning. Paterson detailed how magnesium’s classification among the top 11 critical minerals under recent US executive action has strengthened Latrobe Magnesium’s standing. The move is especially impactful due to the ongoing supply challenges and the collapse of domestic US magnesium production. Discussing planned exports to the US, Paterson noted that the company has engaged in ongoing discussions with the US Department of Defense, who identified magnesium as vital for specific applications, including military countermeasures. The company’s Demonstration Plant is on track to restart operations by the end of next month. Once steady-state production is achieved, Latrobe plans to validate performance data and move into full commissioning of its magnesite (Mag) plant. The facility, described as larger than a typical pilot plant, has already demonstrated successful commissioning. The next phase aims to validate emissions and process efficiency ahead of scale-up. 👉 For more updates and insights, head over to Proactive's YouTube channel.
