It has been a religious center since Viking times – and during the Middle Ages, it became the spiritual heart of the country. In 1164, Uppsala was named the seat of the archbishop, making it the religious capital of Sweden. Our walk takes us to the majestic Uppsala Cathedral – the largest church in the Nordic countries. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries, the cathedral houses the tombs of key historical figures: King Gustav Vasa, botanist Carl Linnaeus, and Saint Erik, the patron saint of Sweden. Just steps away stands Uppsala University, founded in 1477 – the oldest university in Scandinavia. Since then, it has shaped Swedish science, politics, and culture.
