Liquid Architecture, Bus Projects and West Space are disorganising. Over the coming weeks and months we will be hosting events, opening opportunities, and sharing ideas through our organisational channels, and the spaces in between. We begin disorganising in conversation with leading Mexican artist Julieta Aranda who will revisit her work Time/Bank (2009–12, ongoing) as a point of departure for thinking about collective trauma, time-laundering and history-making. Julieta has also suggested that sock puppets may be involved. The presentation will include a screening of Aranda’s film, Notes for a Time/Bank (2012), which articulates a series of reflections about the political, historical and anthropological necessities for the existence of alternative economies and initiatives, such as time banking. Divided in ten chapters, Notes for a Time/Bank combines research on historical attempts to implement alternative economies with various commentaries on the nature and value of money. Julieta is spending time in Naarm this year, having left behind the multiple and prolonged lockdowns in Berlin where she normally lives, and we’re thankful to have the opportunity to disorganise time and money with her.
