This is an inside look at how the crack team at Range Rover set out to reinvent their iconic machine. The SV Autobiography is the latest mega-off roader from a marque that dates back to post-WW2 England. In 1947 automotive designer Maurice Wilks has a problem on his farm. His Rover sedan is once again stuck in the mud. It is not the first time that it’s happened, yet the painful process of setting his stranded vehicle free gives him a radical new idea – to build his very own off-road machine! Little does anyone know how transformative this simple idea will become or that it will launch a civilized off-road revolution. Over the next twenty years Land Rovers become synonymous with wilderness expeditions and conquering terrain deemed too challenging for nearly every other machine on the market. Then in 1970, Land Rover takes its next evolutionary step and introduces another revolutionary machine – The Range Rover. Originally designed to be just as utilitarian as a Land Rover, something totally unexpectedly happens instead. The Range Rover becomes the machine of choice for the posh high-society sect on weekend getaways and hunting excursions. The new customer base gives flight to a new category of automobiles – The SUV.
