This video is part of the @urban_pigeon 'Station to Station' series. A cinematic London walking guide from Farringdon Station to Barbican Station. Step back in time to explore one of London's most historically dense corridors. This journey goes beyond the modern pavement to uncover the layers of medieval markets, gruesome executions, and London's oldest continuous place of worship, before ending amidst the iconic concrete towers of the Barbican Estate. Our walk begins near Farringdon and takes you through Smithfield, famous for its centuries old livestock and meat market. This area holds a grim past as a site of public execution, and we'll pause at the memorial to Sir William Wallace, the Scottish knight executed here in 1305. The highlight of our journey is the stunning Church of St Bartholomew the Great. We'll walk past the Tudor gatehouse and into the quiet Norman-era church, a true oasis of calm amidst the bustling city. The walk concludes at the Barbican Estate, a remarkable Brutalist icon built on a site levelled by the Blitz. The Urban Pigeon Secret – The gatehouse of St Bartholomew the Great is a rare survivor of the Great Fire of London in 1666. While most of the city’s timber-framed Tudor buildings were lost, this gatehouse was protected by the thick stone walls of the priory that once stood here.
