Autonomous weapon systems, deepfakes, support to military decision making, efficient medical delivery services, detection of unexploded munitions, and reunification of family members: AI is disrupting armed conflicts and humanitarian action as much as it is changing our everyday lives. However, in armed conflicts, the risks are being faced by people who are already especially vulnerable – they may have lost their homes, their loved ones, their livelihoods. War is also always messy, dirty and complex, raising question marks as to AI’s ability to operate effectively and reliably in such a volatile and unpredictable environment. How do we find the right balance? How do we keep humanity at the centre of conflicts? Find out more in this panel.
