Jackson Kennedy (vocals, bass), Hannah Melbourn (vocals), Ben Tarrant-Brown (guitar, keyboards) and Laura Conway (drums) decided to form a band together after a series of recurring chance meetings on the 345 night bus to Bixton, London. NightBus (see what they did there?) very quickly went from singing other people's songs together at the back of the bus to making up some of their own, before playing their first live shows and signing a deal with Island-Universal Records. It all happened in little more than a year. 'I Wanna Be You', a song about obsession and stalking, would be the band's debut single, originally scheduled for release in April 2010. Sounding like El Presidente meets Alphabeat versus Scissor Sisters, the video was made available on the NightBus VEVO channel that month (it's actually still there!). Meanwhile, a support slot touring with the then top 10 artist Example had been secured, and the single release was pushed back to July in order to make the most of this exposure, but by August there was still no sign of it. The band continued to play live, augmented with Cecilia Fage (Cobalt Chapel, The Maypoles) on additional bass, appearing at Club NME, Lovebox, Pride and Koko. A hand-finished two-track CD, featuring 'I Wanna Be You' backed with a cover of Chris De Burgh's 'Lady In Red', was being given away at some of these live dates. I don't have one of these discs sadly, I only have the one track promo CD. I'm assuming the cover version (which is sang by Hannah) was the planned b-side of 'I Wanna Be You', whilst club remixes by Thrillers, Grum, Camo & Krooked, Goldierocks, Friends Electric, P.E.S.T. and Slofman were commissioned, but not officially released. The band were most likely dropped at this point, and nothing much happened again until 2013, when Jack and Hannah dropped a new digital single, 'When The Night Time Comes', still using the NightBus name but seemingly without Ben or Laura, or major label backing. Some of the other unreleased tracks the band performed live in 2010 included 'Freak All Week' and 'Kick The Party Out (Crash My Maserati)'.
