Next week, voters across Northeast Ohio will decide the fate of levy and bond issues in their local school districts. But behind every ballot issue is a larger, ongoing fight over how Ohio funds public education — a debate that has fueled controversy, lawsuits, and calls for reform for decades. 3News Investigates is launching a weeklong series, "The Price of Education: The Funding Battle for Ohio's Schools," to explore the roots of the problem and the challenges ahead. Every day, about 1.7 million students in Ohio walk into public schools. Behind each classroom door, however, lies a complicated — and often controversial — system of funding that affects every lesson taught, every teacher hired, and every opportunity available to students. Public education in Ohio is funded through a combination of local property taxes, state dollars, and federal funds. The largest share — roughly 50% — comes from local property taxes.
