They’re waging all-out war on the Authority – the show’s tyrannical, God-like figure that’s locked down human free will for eons. Asriel’s ground troops are storming the Authority’s fortress, but the real power behind the throne, Regent Metatron, unleashes his secret weapon: an endless swarm of Spectres. That’s exactly where your clip picks up. Metatron drops a tidal wave of Spectres from the Clouded Mountain, the Authority’s main sky base. These things don’t care about bullets, bombs, any conventional weapon. The second a Spectre touches a human, it rips out their consciousness and their Dust (the show’s namesake dark matter, the physical embodiment of human free will). Soldiers drop by the dozen – some turn into mindless husks, some die on the spot. In 30 seconds flat, this elite unit is completely decimated, their chain of command shattered, with no way to fight back. Key Easter Eggs & Canon Callbacks This entire sequence – Marisa standing off against the Spectres, Metatron’s big arrival – is pulled straight from chapters 29 and 30 of The Amber Spyglass, the third and final book in Philip Pullman’s original His Dark Materials trilogy. Marisa’s Spectre showdown is the most iconic, badass moment in the entire book series, and the show adapted it almost word-for-word, frame-for-frame, as a huge tribute to long-time fans. Marisa’s ability to control the Spectres wasn’t pulled out of nowhere. They set this up all the way back in Season 2! Remember when Spectres were tearing through the city, devouring every adult in sight, but they refused to go near Marisa, even ran away from her? Back then, everyone thought she had some secret gadget – but this episode finally reveals the real reason: her complete, unflinching acceptance of herself. It’s the most satisfying long-game payoff in the entire show. Metatron’s backstory in the show is 100% true to both real religious lore and the original books. In Jewish tradition, Metatron is the archangel who was once the human Enoch, known as the “Voice of God”, the highest-ranking angel in heaven. In the books, he’s corrupted by his own ambition and lust for power, becoming the tyrannical Regent – and the show nails that exact energy, especially with that overwhelming, godlike presence he brings to the battlefield.
