Carl Manlan is Vice President, Social Impact for Visa Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa CEMEA. He is a driving force in financial inclusion and human sustainability, shaping ecosystems where entrepreneurs, small businesses, and communities can thrive. As Vice President, Inclusive Impact for Visa Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa, he forges strategic partnerships that translate financial access into long-term prosperity. His leadership extends beyond corporate initiatives—he has led transformational social impact programs across 33 African markets, earning the Euromoney Award for Excellence. Previously, as Chief Operating Officer at Ecobank Foundation, he leveraged financial infrastructure to tackle systemic challenges like health, education, and economic opportunity. His experience spans global institutions, including AUDA-NEPAD, the Economic Commission for Africa, The Global Fund, and UNDP, where he connected policy, finance, and social impact. Carl’s insights have been featured in Project Syndicate, Forbes, Le Monde, Scientific American, El País, and the World Economic Forum’s Agenda, reinforcing his role as a thought leader shaping the future of inclusive economies. His work is a testament to one belief: real change happens when innovation meets purpose. Carl holds an undergraduate degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Cape Town and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School. He is a Mo Ibrahim Foundation Fellow and an Aspen Institute New Voices Senior Fellow. In 2015, he was awarded one of the highest civilian honours “Officier de l’Ordre du Méricamn ite du Bénin” for his contribution to the improvement of health financing in the Republic of Benin. He is a 2016 Aspen Institute New Voices Fellow. Recently, he was awarded Euromoney for Excellence 2020 Arward, a recognition for his impactful Initiatives in Africa & Globally.
