Wide of crowd in field STORYLINE: Dancing, music and costumes brought hundreds of Syrian Kurds together to celebrate Newroz on Thursday outside the northeastern city of Qamishli. The festivities symbolize the passing of the dark season, and the arrival of the season of light. The crowd, many in colourful dress, gathered around the stage and central torch to watch the performances. Newroz in Kurdish, or Nowruz in Farsi, means New Day and it is also known as Persian New Year, being celebrated across Syria, Iran, Turkey, and Iraq. The holiday, dating back to at least 1700 BC and incorporating ancient Zoroastrian traditions, is the most important event in the Iranian calendar and for Kurds in the region. But the festival has political importance as it symbolizes the Kurdish culture, and the struggle of the Kurds to have their own autonomous nation. The decorations around the event incorporated the Kurdish flag and banners with the face of Abdullah Ocalan, the Kurdish leader of the militant Kurdistan Workers' Party who is in prison in Turkey.
