The Gorringe Bank is an area of ​​the Atlantic Ocean situated about 120 nautical miles west-southwest of Cape St Vincent, characterized by a submerged mountain massif oriented northeast-southwest and about 200 kilometers long by 80 kilometers width. Two summits stand out, Gettysburg and Ormonde. The microplate of the Iberian Peninsula and the African plate converge obliquely along the Azores-Gilbraltar geological accident, provoking a survey of the oceanic lithosphere that formed the Gorringe bank. In the Gorringe bank are located the epicenters of the most violent earthquakes occurred in Portugal and North Africa, being believed that there was the one of the Earthquake of 1755 that destroyed the city of Lisbon, the Algarve and several cities of Morocco.
