Who is Vaishravana, Heavenly King of the North? Why is he the protector deity recommended for most Dharma students, especially in modern times? Why is his practice especially recommended on the 29th of the lunar month? What does it mean, describing him as a worldly protector? We answer these questions, and more, in this short, informative presentation, with suggestions for practices of this protector who guards not only our Dharma practice, but our wealth. We end with his mantra, how to practice, and a recitation of the Praise of the Great King Vaiśravaṇa by Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö He is universally popular in all streams of Buddhism. His names are Vaiśravaṇa (Sanskrit: वैश्रवण) or Vessavaṇa (Pali; Tibetan: རྣམ་ཐོས་སྲས་, Lhasa dialect: Namtösé, simplified Chinese: 多闻天王; traditional Chinese: 多聞天王; pinyin: Duōwén Tiānwáng, Japanese: 毘沙門天, romanized: Bishamonten). Vaishravana, is among the most popular of practices in most streams of Mahayana Buddhism. He is the leader of the Four Heavenly Kings, who are the supreme among the worldly protectors of Buddhism and the Dharma. The four kings swore to protect the Dharma in front of Shakyamuni Buddha, and because of this unbreakable vow, they are unshakable in their protection of the Dharma and Buddhist practitioners. They are considered worldly, because they remain part of our samsaric world of suffering, offering protection to Dharma practitioners. We honor them after taking Refuge first in the Three Jewels, and especially make offerings to them on the 29th of the lunar month, known as Protector Puja Day. Vaishravana, especially, is the best known as the leader of the Four Kings, treasured for his oath to protect the wealth and safety of Buddhists, and to support the Dharma practitioner materially. He also protects against harm, obstacles, enemies and other causes of suffering that distract us from Dharma practice. HIS PRACTICE OFFERINGS ARE THE FOUR GENEROSITIES: Giving material things and helping others. Giving the Dharma: Sharing teachings and advice. Giving protection against fear: Providing safety from fear. Giving love: Expressing love and compassion. We symbolize this with tormas and tea offerings. His mantra is Om Vaishravana Ye Svaha. The recitation praise: Within the jewelled palace, vast and beautiful, is the mighty Vaiśravaṇa upon a lion throne, resplendent at the head of millions of treasure-keepers. Magnificent one, golden in colour, to you I offer praise. You conquer all external forces without exception — Great master of the yakshas’ and nature spirits, to you I offer praise. Accept this offering, and care for us and those around us as you would your own children. Pulverize malicious enemies and obstructing forces, and swiftly carry out the various forms of activity — Pacifying, enriching, magnetizing and subjugating —as we request you. Guard the precious teachings of the Muni, elevate the status of those who hold the lineage, extend the dominion of the Dharma-protecting king, and carry out your activity of bringing happiness to this world. I dedicate the merit of this practice to the cause for Enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. May all beings have happiness and the causes of happiness. We dedicate the merit of this presentation to the benefit of all sentient beings. #Vaisravana #Vaishravana #वैश्रवण #Vessavana #རྣམ་ཐོས་སྲས་ #Namtose #多闻天王 #多聞天王 #DuowenTianwang #毘沙門天 #Bishamonten
